‘Maison’ is French for ‘house’. In this case the word is slightly misleading. While no palace, though sited in the Place des Vosges – originally known as Place Royale – Maison de Victor Hugo is no simple domicile. These sprawling apartments were the home of the famed writer between 1832 and 1848. Hugo fled from the revolution in that year.

Mon, 19 Dec 2011 21:06:00 -0800 Diving In Belitung (Billiton), Indonesia http://cityshopping.posterous.com/diving-in-belitung-billiton-indonesia http://cityshopping.posterous.com/diving-in-belitung-billiton-indonesia

Do not want to be merely a destination for fans of novel and coffee, Belitung (Billiton) is now actively promoting diving. The potency is huge, but the facility is something that needs a lot of improvement.

Belitung Diving Deep Down

Suppose Andrea Hirata hobby is diving, maybe he will tell Island's underwater nature in his novel: Laskar Pelangi. While visiting the East Belitung island in mid-October, I found this island proved to have the potential to be a diving destination. Corals grow close together and it has a pretty good collection of fish, at least in certain seasons.

For visitors without diving certificate, snorkelling is not less interesting. Buy an island hopping package tour, you can stop for a moment on one small island to swim and enjoy the crystal clear shallow waters in the vicinity.

Belitung Diving Deep Down

Just a tip, all of the activity - island hopping, diving, and snorkeling is ideally acted in the mid-year when the weather is sunny and the currents is relatively calm.

The Laskar Pelangi novel and movie successfully catapulted the name of Belitung, but the repercussions can not be maintained as a tourist magnet. I do not think many people are willing to visit schools replica repeatedly.

That is why since two years ago the East Belitung regional government began to look nautical activities. They print the books featuring underwater photographs of the region, and invited many journalists from Jakarta to carry out diving tour.

Belitung island

This year, an underwater photo contest was held in order to hoist the prestige among divers. All efforts have been made, but unfortunately one is forgotten, which provides services to the diver.

When I arrived, the East Belitung don't have dive center and dive resort, as a result, divers must bring their own tools or rent them in Bangka. That means extra baggage charges on aircraft.

Another problem is the tin business, injuring ecology and natural aesthetics. Local government claimed to have fought to stop the mining activities, but this effort will not be easy, because the community has been so long rely on the tin which incidentally offers a "quick buck" rather than long-term dimension of tourism.

In the midst of a divers wave to the eastern Indonesia, Belitung might actually offer alternative destination in its western side which is closer in distance, at least compared to Weh Island in Aceh.

Belitung can be reached within 45 minutes from Jakarta. The main roads are smooth and maintained, the people are friendly with low crime rates.

Strategic island location can also be a capital to attract foreign tourists. Flanked by Kalimantan (Borneo) and Sumatra, Belitung lay on cruise ship tracks that depart from Singapore to eastern Indonesia.

One more Belitung appeal; it does not have dive sites map, so the diver will be faced with a challenging terrain (and surprise). In the absence of the map, you have the opportunity to find the best dive sites, and give them name as you like to, for example Andrea Reef or Hirata Slopes.

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 18:45:00 -0800 The Chrysler Building, New York City http://cityshopping.posterous.com/the-chrysler-building-new-york-city http://cityshopping.posterous.com/the-chrysler-building-new-york-city

With all the property acquisition of famous buildings over the last thirty years there is still, thankfully, one that has retained its original name: The Chrysler Building in New York City.

The Chrysler building
The top of The Chrysler building

Though the Chrysler Corporation, long since acquired by Daimler-Benz, moved out in the mid-1950s, the building that bears its name remains one of the world's most recognizable structures.

Its distinctive Art Deco design represents the pinnacle of that architectural movement. A 77-story rectangular building, the upper floors are a wonderland of steel-clad arches garnished with automotive-themed gargoyles. Those arches form a narrowing cascade to the building's once-record breaking 1,048 foot peak, where a spire caps the work.

The 185 ft spire, delivered and raised to the top in secrecy was installed in 90 minutes to beat contemporary competitors also reaching for 'the world's tallest' status.

Only photographs can begin to do the image justice, but the best option is to stand a few blocks away up Lexington north of the 42nd Street site on a sunny day.

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscrape...
An Art Deco skyscraper in New York City

In this way the visitor can best see the entire seven story pinnacle of shining arches. From this distance the spire and blue-steel and aluminum facade gleam, while the flying wings - emblematic of Chrysler hood ornaments, are clearly visible.

From the wings on the 31st floor to eagle heads at the 61st the corners are bedecked with reminders of an age when autos were among the latest technological innovations.

The interior is no less impressive.

On the lobby walls are Art Deco murals of several different designs. The mosaics carry out the building's theme, but in much darker colors - an alternating array of browns and blacks that provide the interior its more serious side.

The dark onyx and amber African marble, alternating with shining chrome, is rich and well-maintained, befitting its status as part of one of the world's icons.

Completed in 1930, the building briefly held the record for the world's tallest structure - intentionally surpassing the Eiffel Tower - until it was in turn surpassed by The Empire State Building four months later.

But to this day it retains the prize as one of the top 10 architectural marvels of the modern age and is still the tallest brick building in the world. Get map directions to and from the Chrysler Building.

Commissioned by the chairman of Chrysler, the building grew in 1928 and 1929 at the rate of four floors per week. Not even the beginning ofthe Depression was able to dampen enthusiasm for the construction project. Though the economic downturn did have one victim - the observation floor, later turned into a restaurant that also subsequently closed.

At one point nearly 3,000 workers were employed simultaneously on the $20 million project. The building was constructed using nearly 21,000 tons of steel, 400,000 rivets and almost four million bricks. Even for such a large building (over 111,000 square meters) it has a substantial number of elevators, 32.

Comparison of skyscrapers in New York

The building has a varied history. Chrysler refused to pay architect van Alen's fee on the grounds he'd bribed contractors. Even the original lighting design was only finally discovered and installed in the 1980s.

But whatever its checkered past, the results remain one of the must-see destinations for every visitor to a city already crowded with competing sights.

The Chrysler building is easily reached via bus or subway to Lexington and 42nd Street.

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 18:38:00 -0800 Central Park, New York City http://cityshopping.posterous.com/central-park-new-york-city http://cityshopping.posterous.com/central-park-new-york-city

Completed in 1873, Central Park New York City is among the world's great urban innovations. Bound by 5th and 8th avenues on the east and west respectively, and from 59th Street on the south, 110th Street on the north, these 843 acres encompass a lot to see and do.

Central Park, New York
Central Park, New York. 2009

With two skating rinks, horseback riding, and skating and bicycle trails, the athletic won't want for anything that suits their taste. For those who enjoy a more leisurely pace, the many sculptures, lakes and bird species provide ample opportunities for just gazing.

Largely grass dotted with trees and shrubs, there are nonetheless sidewalks all around and through the park for strolls and people watching. Plenty of that can be had, since the park is visited by some 25 million annually. Even so, the once fearsome crime rate has dropped to at or below every other urban park in the world.

Winding through the park is a 6mi (10km) road along which travel cars as well as the occasional horse-drawn cart. The romantic ride is still a favorite activity more than a hundred years after the service began. It makes for an especially relaxing treat during the Fall when the leaves turn to red and gold.

Several other roads cut through the middle of the park, though with restricted hours, to make cross-town car travel more convenient. Beware the zooming taxis!

The Central Park Zoo is modest cost and houses Tamarin monkeys, large cats and a wide variety of other animals, not the least of which is Gus the Polar Bear. Long one of the lesser zoos in the US, it enjoyed a renaissance in the 1990s and now joins Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn and Queens Zoo in Queens as one of the city's major attractions.

NYC - Central Park: Obelisk
Central Park Obelisk

Along the edges of the park there are several museums, including one of the world's great storehouses of art: The Metropolitan Museum of Art at Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street. Low-cost and varied, art lovers should be prepared to spend a day or two if they wish to see the entire 6,000 year collection.

Get map directions to and from The Central Park, NYC.

The Natural History Museum is sited on the west side of the park at 79th Street and Central Park West. Here the collection is, ahem, somewhat older than 6,000 years with artifacts dating back, in some cases, millions.

In between these two jewels are several other sites and activities to interest the culture-lover. During the summer, Shakespeare in the Park attracts thousands of devotees of the bard, and the Metropolitan Opera puts on two concerts per year, as well. The New York Philharmonic often gets into the act, traveling a block from Lincoln Center to put on an open-air concert.

Before the concert, a glass of wine or a fine meal can be had at the renowned Tavern on the Green restaurant. Be sure to make reservations several months in advance, though.

While you're at the Central Park New York City, looking at things new and old, don't miss seeing the ancient Egyptian Obelisk. It isn't often you see centuries old sculptures in the middle of the world's most modern cities.

Enjoy!

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 02:52:00 -0800 Best of Broadway New York http://cityshopping.posterous.com/best-of-broadway-new-york http://cityshopping.posterous.com/best-of-broadway-new-york

broadway, lower manhattanAlong Broadway in Manhattan there are more things to do and see on one street than in many large cities. This long avenue runs north-south, mostly, and its deviations are appropriate to its role in the life of New York. For, Broadway is home to business, theater, dining, shops and a host of famous buildings.

Flatiron Building (center, in background); New...Where Broadway intersects Fifth Avenue, at 23rd street, lies the turn-of-the-century Flatiron Building. Sited on a triangular plot, this wedge-shaped 21-story office building has attracted the curious since its completion in 1901. Even then, the unusual site produced wind gusts that lifted skirts, attracting male onlookers who were shooed away by the policeman's once-famous phrase '23 Skidoo'.

Another best of Broadway in New York is only a little further up, at 233 Broadway, is the medieval-looking Woolworth Building. Completed in 1913, it was the tallest building in New York prior to the completion of the Chrysler Building. Even today its tall floors combine to reach the equivalent height of an 80-story skyscraper. Inside, its cathedral-like décor makes this massive tower an architectural marvel inside and out.

A view of the Chrysler Building from the Empir...Only ten minutes further north is Times Square, recognized the world over as the home of New Year's neon lights and nightly Broadway theater. Centered at 42nd Street, it runs roughly from 8th Avenue to Broadway and up to 46th Street. The boundaries are not exact - the theaters are housed as high as 53rd.

In the daytime, it's just a busy mid-town area where taxis zoom through clothing designers carting their creations and the New York Times creates a daily newspaper. At night, the lights sparkle and the city begins to dance to the latest Broadway tune.

Inexpensive, last-minute tickets to a show can sometimes be had for those wishing to wait in line at TKTS in the heart of the area. 25-50% discounts are common, but availability is hit-or-miss. (And half of $100 still ain't cheap!)

A rejuvenation in the 1990s made the once-seedy district safe and family friendly with a Disney store, Virgin Megastore, comedy clubs and much more.

Lindy's CheesecakeBut, there are also restaurants and shops and people watching to amuse and delight the traveler. Not least of the eateries is The Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center just north of Times Square at 48th Street. Not to be outdone, though, is the famous deli: Lindy's. Cheesecake isn't the only thing famous at 1655 Broadway, where sooner or later all the celebrities come to eat.

Continuing past these landmarks one sooner rather than later reaches Columbus Circle at 59th Street, the site of several famous movie scenes along with the giant Paramount (Gulf & Western) Communications building atop the subway entrance. Wind gusts here can combine with the rain and polished plaza stone to actually push a pedestrian backwards!

Central Park, New YorkVeering left at the corner of Central Park and continuing north a couple of blocks is the Lincoln Center music and dance complex. At 62nd. Home to the world-class American Ballet Theater, the Joffrey and other companies, the center also hosts the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. The famous performing school, Juilliard is also located here.

All that is just a few of what we can say as the best of Broadway New York. Whether your taste is theater, dining, shopping, or just plain looking Broadway offers something for every taste.

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 02:41:00 -0800 Pastime Locations: Times Square New York http://cityshopping.posterous.com/pastime-locations-times-square-new-york http://cityshopping.posterous.com/pastime-locations-times-square-new-york

Times Square is the heart of New York City in so many ways, this neon-lit district is the Las Vegas of Manhattan. For nearly twenty years, apart from Broadway shows, the area was almost unbearable owing to the seedy inhabitants and shops. No more.

42nd Street
42nd Street Subway

Originally developed in the 1830s by the wealthy Astor family as a nose-in-the-air neighborhood, the current name came into being when the New York Timesestablished itself there in 1906. When the subways made it to the 42nd Street, the city's theater producers moved from lower Manhattan, filling 76 theaters by 1928.

During WWII families could visit a show, have a bite to eat and return home without worry. That's true again, thanks to an extensive rejuvenation effort that began in the 1990s. The crowds are still there, thicker than even normally crowded Manhattan. But for both the natives and visitors there are theaters, restaurants, shops and much more.

Toys R Us Times Square 1
Toys R Us Times Square

Disney moved in, as did Toys "R" Us where kids can enjoy the indoor Ferris wheel ride. Virgin Megastore is nearby for the teens who get bored. There's a Madame Tussauds Wax Museum (similar to the one in San Francisco or London), along with an eccentric Hershey Store.

For those who want to take in a Broadway show - but don't want to pay the $100 or more (for some), there'sTKTS at 47th Street. This outdoor booth sells last minute seats to a dozen shows at discounts of 25-50%. Availability is varied and the line is long, but obviously many find it worth the wait.

The police patrol the area heavily and seeing their retro/futuristic station is one of the many worthwhile sights along with the speed chess players and street performers. Be prepared to hear a song whether you like it or not!

Planet Hollywood Times Square
Planet Hollywood - Times Square

Dining opportunities are ample and run the gamut from Burger King to Planet Hollywood to an upscale Italian dinner at Cara Mia. There's even Brazilian fare at Brazil Grill on 47th and 8th Avenue, where the steak is to die for. BB King, the R & B guitarist has gotten into the act with an eponymous eaterie of his own.

Even during the day there's lots to see and do. Good Morning America broadcasts weekdays from the ABC Times Square Studios and the hosts often interview people on the street. They also host live bands and solo performers for segments on the show.

Madame Tussauds, New York, HDR
Madame Tussauds - New York

New York's famous clothing designers make their living not far away and you'll often see workers hauling racks of clothing to and fro. Not something you'll see in every major city, it helps to create some of New York's special ambiance.

Even the non-famous names make for an interesting visit, as there are dozens of jazz clubs, bars and other serving venues around. The street vendors, too, offer edible food and interesting gifts to take back home.

Other pastime locations in Times Square New York are Rockefeller Center, the CBS Building and a host of other architectural marvels that make for worthwhile daytime sightseeing.

Be sure to make time to just stand (someplace you won't be crushed!) and take in the huge sign atOne Times Square. That's the location (now) from which the illuminated ball is dropped on New Year's Eve. A tradition since the NY Times opened its building around the corner in 1906/1907, the air is brisk and the crowd lively.

Wed, 23 Nov 2011 02:18:00 -0800 Manhattan Overview - The New York City 'Capital' http://cityshopping.posterous.com/manhattan-overview-the-new-york-city-capital http://cityshopping.posterous.com/manhattan-overview-the-new-york-city-capital

Planning a trip to New York? Here's "Manhattan overview", the short review of a so-called area you wouldn't want to miss a visit in New York City.

Manhattan, considered as the 'Capital' of New York City. On a slender island crammed with taxis, buses, people and buildings a long string of innovators has managed to create both a major business center and a tourist paradise. All within easy reach by subway, bus or taxi.

Manhattan Map CartoonClose to the southern tip of the island is the famed Wall Street area. Showing its Dutch origins and its geography, the streets run along at various angles and for short distances. But within those confines is housed many of the world's financial powerhouses.

To see them in action, visit the New York Stock Exchange and listen to the traders engage in the two-centuries-old 'outcry' system, where orders are literally shouted out.

Though destroyed now, the World Trade Center is scheduled to rise again in the form of The Freedom Tower. At 1,776 feet it will be one of the world's tallest and the famous Windows of the World restaurant and 360 degree viewing platform will be part of the building.

Ten minutes north on the subway is SoHo, (SOuth of HOuston) the renowned art gallery nexus of New York's artist colony. Here you can find everything from Old Dutch Masters to the latest experiments with paint, metal, stone and who-knows-what-next.

Just a short walk north from SoHo is Greenwich Village, home to jazz, comedy clubs and small theaters, restaurants and the most interesting assortment of eccentrics the city can display. Don't miss the breakfast as MacDougal's (at the corner of MacDougal and Bleeker)!

At the top of Greenwich Village is New York University and Washington Square Park, with a famous miniature 'Arch d'Triomphe' and should-be-famous chess players. Enjoy a cup of coffee and watch a lightening-fast game.

Apartments dominate the scene until you reach 31st street where on the West Side (7th Ave) you have Madison Square Garden, which is neither square, gardened nor on Madison. (Two of the three were true a hundred years ago.) Concerts, boxing and a major train station form only three of the attractions here.

A few blocks east to Fifth Avenue and you come upon the eighth wonder of the world: The Empire State Building. The Art Deco tower was built in record time and remains one of the largest office buildings in the world, seventy years later.

A short walk north and east you'll find Broadway and 42nd Street and Times Square, the center of American theater. Only eight blocks east and two north of there is the Art Deco Rockefeller Center with an outdoor skating rink, Radio City Music Hall and a very stylish restaurant: The Rainbow Room.

Scattered throughout the mid-town business district are some of the other justly famous buildings: The Pan Am (now the MetLife - underneath is Grand Central Station), Lever Bros, Seagram's, Citicorp and - on the East River - the United Nations.

It's been a long walk, but just a few blocks more and you reach Central Park. 843 acres of grass, hillocks and sidewalks where during the day you can enjoy the scenery and watch the skaters or visit the Zoo. At night, during the summer, there's Shakespeare in the Park.

Even on a whirlwind tour, there's far more than one could take in during a single visit. You haven't even made it yet to Lincoln Center or the world-class Metropolitan Art Museum! As a conclusion to this Manhattan Overview: Plan to stay a while, or make several trips. You'll need to just to sample some of the stellar restaurants.

Wed, 23 Nov 2011 02:10:00 -0800 New York City Overview http://cityshopping.posterous.com/new-york-city-overview http://cityshopping.posterous.com/new-york-city-overview

This article shows the New York City overview for you to easily prepare a trip to this amazing city.

Nearly 40 million tourists from around the world visit New York City every year. What they find is a bustling metropolis, dense with museums, parks, theaters, shops, famous buildings and inhabitants as diverse as themselves.

New York City Overview

Far from its sometimes mythical image, New York City is one of the safest large cities for tourists anywhere on the globe. It has the lowest crime rate of any major American city. For a city with over 8 million inhabitants and a population density over 26,000 per square mile (Manhattan is nearly 67,000 per square mile), that's remarkable.

Divided, more or less by geographical boundaries, the city is composed of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Each has its distinct identity and is chock full of things to see and do.

Weather year-round ranges from envigorating to mildly uncomfortable. Winters can be cold, but there's rarely snow. Spring and Fall bring pleasant temperatures and moderate rain, but the rainfall rarely lasts more than a couple of hours at a time. Summers are typically humid and can reach the high 80s or more. (Fahrenheit, high 20s Celsius.)

The Bronx, Staten Island and Queens generally contain fewer attractions for tourists, though there are exceptions.

Staten Island is primarily suburban, but the Ferry ride to and from Manhattan is a treat for those who like the Atlantic Ocean breezes. Both baseball and tennis can be found in spring and summer in Queens.

Brooklyn is home to several justly world-famous parks and museums and is only an hour away via the modest-cost, easy-to-navigate subway. The art museum alone is worth the trip and don't forget to visit historical, but still popular, Coney Island.

Most of the major attractions are in Manhattan, a cigar-shaped island about three miles wide by 22 miles long. Easy to navigate even for the newcomer, almost all the streets run either North-South or East-West.

From the East River (FDR Drive) there's 1st Avenue, through Fifth along the mid-section to 12th Avenue running North-South along the Hudson River. From about 12th Street (not 12th Avenue!), the streets increase in number as you travel north.

So, if you're at 42nd Street, walk 17 short blocks north and you'll hit Columbus Circle at 59th Street. A little farther and you'll find Lincoln Center, a large center for music and theater and dance performances. Easy!

Travel prices, as they are with most destinations, tend to be higher in the prime season of mid-spring to early fall, but the great thing about New York is it's terrific year round.

Skiing trips in winter are available by traveling a few hours upstate by train, and late Fall is still mild enough to enjoy the leaves in Central Park as you stroll through the Zoo.

Of course this 500 words article won't be enough even just to call it as New York City overview. There are far more things to do and see than anyone could in just one trip, so plan several visits. Just be ready to move fast, because New York is one big beehive of fun!

New Yorkers are famous for many things, not least of which is a sense of irony. One more instance of that can be found in the fact that Wall Street, by which most people really mean the New York Stock Exchange, isn't located on the street called Wall at all. It's actually at 20 Broad Street.

But, it's a minor quibble that most Manhattanites would rightly dismiss with a characteristic wave of the hand.

Though the stock exchange tour has been closed since 9/11, the building is still a sight to behold and the streets of the surrounding area could form a study in the history of architecture. George Washington was inaugurated in Federal Hall and important events have been occurring here ever since.

Whether viewing the stately, turn-of-the-century NYSE building or the ultra-modern American Express the area carved out by the Dutch in 1653 is full of amazing sights. The actual Wall Street did get its name from running alongside a wooden palisade erected then to protect the town from wild Indians. Now, along the short, random-angled streets is a cornucopia of people and buildings of all shapes and sizes.

And don't forget to take a photo near the now-famous bull sculpture, placed in 1989. Near the Cunard Building just down from Wall Street, this bronze behemoth is larger than your average bear. Some contend it has eclipsed its chief rival, a large red metal sculpture that no one could identify, including its creator.

South street seaport in New York City

The area houses not only large financial institutions and other corporate giants, but an array of pubs and restaurants to rival any of its uptown competitors. Just be careful what you say about your company there. You never know who'll be at the next table and the only thing that moves faster than trades here is the rumor mill.

Not far away (south) are the departure points for the Staten Island Ferry, or the tours of the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island.

But, if those don't suit your fancy travel east a few blocks to the South Street Seaport along the East River at Fulton. There you'll find a hundred shops, dozens of restaurants and several outdoor venues including a maritime museum. Ships docked there hark back to the days when wind in sails was the main power source. You'll be surprised at how small the captain's cabin is!

The view of Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan
Image via Wikipedia

Take a few minutes to just stand and look at the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge, the world's first wire-suspension type and an artistic marvel. From time to time, you'll even see private boats and yachts making their way up the river to docks connected to private apartments further uptown.

19th Century history combines with the most modern art and engineering here in one of New York's most popular tourist areas. The newly developing World Trade Center site, where the Freedom Tower is under construction, deserves a few moments of quiet contemplation.

Just be prepared to bump elbows with the crowds in the morning, at lunch and in the evening when the thousands of busy, temporary inhabitants flood the streets.

Geographically, New York City is divided into five boroughs or districts: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx. Interestingly, each houses a botanical garden and deciding which is the best is an exercise we leave to experts.

But for the visitor wanting only to experience the quiet, lush beauty of the extraordinary settings no controversial decision is necessary. Simply visit them all!

Lower Central Park

1. Manhattan hosts, of course, Central Park. While not designed as a botanical garden there are nonetheless thousands of flower and tree species on display.

Carefully sculpted and landscaped in accordance with Frederick Law Olmstead's original master plan, the current park has seen a Renaissance in recent years and is a must-see destination.

2. A short subway ride north, next to the world famous Bronx Zoo, is the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Located on 250 acres of the northern half of Bronx Park there are 16 gardens.

Here the lover of nature can find the country's largest Victorian greenhouse, along with the International Plant Science Center where botanical research has been ongoing since 1891.

The Enid Haupt Conservatory holds several flower shows and exhibitions while the Ross Conifer Arboretum features the country's largest collection of century-old pines, spruces and firs. And be sure not to miss the annual Tulip Festival.

3. Take the subway back down, all the way to the southern tip of Manhattan and step onto the Staten Island ferry. Disembark and experience the Staten Island Botanical Garden at 1000 Richmond Terrace.

Founded in 1977, the gardens are home to everything from English perennials to the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden. Chinese Scholar gardens date back to the Ming Dynasty and this one holds a series of pavilions and covered walkways.

Located within the grounds of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center the Victorian charm of the English style garden is a delightful lush companion to the more spare Chinese style.

4. Take the bus across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge or the subway under it to Brooklyn and see the BBG. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden houses a dozen gardens each as unique as Brooklyn itself.

Whether your interest is in the aromatic - the Herb Garden, or you prefer the spare - the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, the BBG has something for every plant lover.

Explore in depth the Shakespeare Garden donated by Henry Folger, founder of the Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. The original dates back to 1925 and, though relocated from the original location, here can be found over 80 plants mentioned in the works of the Bard.

The BBG also contains the Steinhardt Conservatory with a gallery displaying a variety of educational and entertaining works related to the exhibits. The Curator's Corner offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the artistic displays are created.

5. A short bus or subway ride up to Queens offers the visitor another 39 acres of secluded blossoms to refresh the spirit. Free to the over 300,000 visitors arriving annually, the gardens have been a must-see destination since their origin at the 1939 World's Fair. The Garden relocated to the present site in 1963.

There's the three-acre Wedding Garden, in true 19th century Victorian style and the six-acre Perkins Memorial Rose Garden, one of the nation's largest. There is even a composting education facility in the Arboretum for blossoming gardeners.

Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:47:00 -0800 CBS Building in New York City (NYC) http://cityshopping.posterous.com/cbs-building-in-new-york-city-nyc http://cityshopping.posterous.com/cbs-building-in-new-york-city-nyc

At 38 stories, the CBS building in New York isn't anywhere near the tallest. Its location at 52nd St and 6th Avenue isn't special. Even its design and construction were not - as buildings go - controversial. But, for what it offers both inside and out, CBS is a destination of choice for visitors of New York.

CBS Building
Image via Wikipedia

The Eero Saarinen designed edifice is at the apogee of the International Style. Saarinen, a Finnish born architect of world-renown, also designed the elegant Washington DC airport terminal. The CBS building is his only skyscraper.

The building's dark gray exterior is formed by straight-to-the-sky concrete pillars clad in Canadian black granite alternating with darkened glass. It appears almost as a modern version of a medieval castle, with an inviting plaza substituted for a drawbridge.

Completed in 1965, the building still houses the CBS corporate headquarters where decisions affecting billions are made and the structure is as serious as its purpose. Yet its stark beauty is undeniable.

It was the first skyscraper to use a reinforced concrete support frame rather than steel. Departing aesthetically as well as technologically it deviates boldly from the strict International Style. It is not just another flat glass and metal box. It has panache.

CBS in New York has a lighter side, though.

Down the block at 524 West 57th St are the headquarters of CBS News and the main broadcast facility for both radio and TV. Here the outrageous and the serious share office and broadcasting space.

Ed Sullivan Theater
Ed Sullivan Theatre

Inside the building the glitzy gossip show 'Inside Edition' is taped. Just around the corner, CBS News intones its views to the world. Popular soap operas weep daily from the studios here.

CBS owns two other major studio centers in Manhattan: Studio 58 inside the General Motors building at 58th St and Fifth Avenue, and the Ed Sullivan Theater (Studio 50) at 1697 Broadway.

tkts offerings
TKTS Offerings

The Early Show is taped daily at the Studio 58 facility and David Letterman airs nightly from Studio 50. Outside the Ed Sullivan theater the David Letterman Show sign is prominent.

Whether world-class architecture is to your taste, or you just want to sit in on one of the tapings for The Early Show or David Letterman, CBS has something to offer every tourist.

Tours and tickets are available for those who plan in advance. But, if your visit is spur-of-the-moment, you might still be able to pick up tickets at the Times Square discount booth TKTS.

Selling tickets primarily for Broadway shows, the booth sometimes has spare tickets for TV shows. Also ticket scalpers tend to hang around the area, so keep your ears open and you just might be able to get something on the sly.

And, if you just want to enjoy a stellar meal at the base of one of the world's finest examples of architecture, the restaurant inside the CBS building plaza is first rate.

Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:34:00 -0800 The Cloisters New York http://cityshopping.posterous.com/the-cloisters-new-york http://cityshopping.posterous.com/the-cloisters-new-york

It's rare to find an oasis of calm in frenetic New York City. The lights of Broadway, the zooming taxis and the throngs of people all suggest what New York is: a bustling, modern metropolis. Even lush Central Park is a buzz with skaters, Frisbee tossers and the odd car crossing from east to west.

The Cloisters as seen from the Hudson River.
The Cloisters as seen from Hudson River

But not far north, and surprisingly still part of Manhattan, is a zone of peace and quiet from the Middle Ages - The Cloisters.

Though constructed in the 1930s, on land donated by John D. Rockefeller, the museum was designed to closely resemble five medieval Cloisters. Most of the structures and collection center around two broad periods, the Romanesque (roughly from 1100-1150AD) and the Gothic (approx. 1150-1520AD).

The facility is owned and managed as a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (at Fifth Ave and 82nd St), but geographically, artistically and in setting it is worlds away.

One chapel at The Cloisters New York shows the distinctive style of the Romanesque with its broad barrel vault ceilings and simplified paintings and sculpture. Here, the early Christian fresco (wall painting on wet plaster) dominates the apse, where Mary is depicted flanked by winged figures Michael and Gabriel.

Cloisters outside1
Image via Wikipedia

The adjacent Chapter House (from Notre-Dame-de-Pontaut) is in a transitional style, showing the influence of both Romanesque and Gothic touches. Thick walls and small windows characteristic of Romanesque architecture form part of the structure, while the vaulted ceiling shows clear Gothic construction.

Chapter houses were important meeting places for monastic business and entering the structure one can easily picture being part of the discussion.

The Gothic Chapel completes the transition, displaying wide, stained-glass windows, a rib-vaulted ceiling and ample floor space. Here again the visitor is immediately enveloped in an atmosphere that takes one away from the busy city and back to the slow, quiet medieval period.

The exteriors and grounds are consistent with that peaceful aura with large expanses of grass, an herb garden and a general serenity not found in other parts of Manhattan. The views of the upper Hudson River contribute to the sense of being transported back in time to a pre-technological era.

But without question the highlights of the museum are its many artifacts of the period. Whether considering the famous Book of Hours or the even more famous Unicorn Tapestries the artwork (also funded by Rockefeller) is among the best anywhere.

Annunciation Triptych (Merode Altarpiece)
Annunciation Triptych (Merode Altarpiece)

The tapestries are a series of seven wool and silk weaves depicting the storied Hunt of the Unicorn. In the hangings one sees the many religious allegories that formed such a central part of medieval life.

There are many other pieces in the collection though. In the Spanish Room is located the three-paneled, 15th century Altarpiece of the Annunciation. And there are several elaborately illustrated manuscripts from the period. The three rooms of the Treasury contain several works from the 12th through the 15th centuries that are also worth a look.

The Cloisters NYC is located at 190th Street in upper Manhattan and is easily accessible via express bus or the 'A' subway train.

Tue, 15 Nov 2011 02:26:00 -0800 Brooklyn Bridge Manhattan http://cityshopping.posterous.com/brooklyn-bridge-manhattan http://cityshopping.posterous.com/brooklyn-bridge-manhattan

Manhattan Brooklyn Bridge is one of the world's most famous bridges, who could think that a steel roadway could engender such controversy and passion? Yet, that's the history of the Brooklyn Bridgesince before its construction began to the present day.

Brooklyn Bridge, 1895.
Brooklyn Bridge, 1895

Brooklyn Bridge History

Initiated by John A. Roebling, who by 1867 had already created other noted bridges, the project took years to even begin. As with most large-scale efforts, finance and politics struggled while the citizens of Brooklyn and Manhattan waited.

Finally, in 1870, construction began - sadly, without J.A. Roebling who by that time had died from an injury sustained earlier on the site. His son Washington, by now also an accomplished bridge engineer, immediately took over direction of the project.

He threw himself into the effort with such active participation that he too eventually suffered a debilitating injury. He became crippled from the bends. Excess nitrogen build-up in caissons, large airtight cylinders used to house men and equipment under the East River, produced the now-familiar 'diving sickness' when men moved back to the surface. At the time, the causes were poorly understood.

Though bedridden, after partial recovery Washington continued to supervise from his apartment. Active management of the project passed to his wife, Emily. Their joint efforts led - after many stalls from political interference and financial and construction difficulties - to the completed structure, in 1883.

On its first day the new roadway above the East River joining Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn Heights hosted 150,000 people and 1,800 cars. Each person paid one cent to cross, vehicles five cents. The bridge was a success - artistically, financially, and technologically.

New York: Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge, 2010

Now

This National Historic landmark now provides a path for over 140,000 vehicles daily across its 1,595 foot (486m) span. The bridge is recognized the world over for the two Gothic towers 276 feet (84m) high, which support the at-the-time innovative suspension cables. The distinctive red paint and numerous designs add to the beauty that's perfectly integrated into the brilliant engineering.

Still today thousands stand far away to get a breathtaking view, then walk the bridge to see both the view of Manhattan and to experience the structure itself.

The breezy walk can take as short as half an hour, to an hour or more. Along the way there are several plaques that provide interesting historical tidbits about the construction, the participants, and the views one might have seen in 1883.

They provide descriptions of Ellis Island, the first stopping point for many of the immigrants arriving in America at the time, as well as Governor's Island (a former Coast Guard installation).

From the bridge, pedestrians can look out and see the Statue of Liberty off the southern tip of Manhattan as well as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connecting Brooklyn to Staten Island to the south.

How to Get to Manhattan Brooklyn Bridge?

Getting there is easy from either the Brooklyn or Manhattan side. In Manhattan, just take the 4,5,6 to Brooklyn Bridge or the J/M/Z to Chambers St. In Brooklyn just take the A to High St. The walkway entrance is near the Federal Court Building.

Be sure to take a jacket and guard your hat. The wind over the East River can be cold and strong.

Fri, 11 Nov 2011 18:50:00 -0800 Carnegie Hall New York City http://cityshopping.posterous.com/carnegie-hall-new-york-city http://cityshopping.posterous.com/carnegie-hall-new-york-city

For over 100 years, Carnegie Hall has been the mutual destination of musicians seeking the highest level of their profession and those who want to experience their efforts.

Fotografiert von Martin Dürrschnabel Carnegie ...

Whether your taste runs to classical or jazz, folk or pop, Carnegie Hall New York has hosted them all. Tchaikovsky guest conducted the first performance in 1891, but the decades after saw performances byBenny GoodmanFrank Sinatra, The Beatles, Judy Collins and many others.

The building gained its name as a consequence of being yet another offspring of the great industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. Completed in 1897, just over 100 years later Carnegie Hall offers not only the three original auditoriums but also a museum, tours, and (since 1990) an adjoining office tower.

The main hall is the main attraction. Enormously tall, visitors can climb as many 105 steps to the top. Elevators exist for the less hardy.

The acoustics are world class, especially since the removal in 1995 of a concrete slab that some insisted altered the original sound. The late violinist Isaac Stern is said to have remarked: 'It takes what you do and makes it larger than life.'

Photograph of Carnegie Hall, New York City. (S...

Thanks to his efforts the building was saved from demolition in the 1950s and achieved Landmark status in 1964. Stern Hall, the main hall named in his honor, seats 2,800.

The smaller auditoriums are also actively used.

Zankel Hall, which seats 599, has seen various uses since 1898. Converted to a movie theater in 1959 it reopened as a music venue in September 2003. Weil Recital Hall named for the renowned investment banker, Sanford Weil is the newest facility, opening in 2004. It seats 268.

The building also houses the Rose Museum and Carnegie Archives where visitors can find artifacts and memorabilia on display covering the history of the famous site.

The exterior of the building, while less interesting than the architecture and activity of the interior, is well worth a look. Done in Italian Renaissance-revival style, the brown terra-cotta gives the arena a look appropriate to its function.

And just next door was, until just a few years ago, the famous Russian Tea Room. Founded in 1926 by former members of the Russian Imperial Ballet, the restaurant was host to many movers and shakers over the decades.

Within its Russian red walls and samovar-decorated halls were fed some of Carnegie Hall's stellar performers. Alas now closed, there are ongoing efforts to re-open the restaurant in some form.

Carnegie Hall presents Ensemble ACJW

Also, just around the corner is Steinway Hall - housing the maker of exquisite instruments often used by Carnegie's pianists. Here are displayed some of the finest pianos in the world.

Carnegie Hall New York still holds over 100 performances a year, yet tickets are expensive and often hard to obtain for certain performances. Be sure to book well in advance to hear some of New York's, and thereby the world's, finest musical artists practice their craft.

Carnegie Hall is located just off the corner of 57th St and 7th Avenue in Manhattan.

All decors, price ranges, ambiance and kinds of acts are here in abundance. Uptown, downtown, mid-town and Greenwich or East Side, West Side and even a few in Brooklyn - they dot the New York City landscape like fireflies in Central Park.

New York Skyline at Night

Everything from ballroom dancing to the latest thing (which there's no point in naming, since before this sees press it will be replaced by something new) is easy to find. Jazz venues range from Coltrane or Basie-style to the artists that will become famous next year. Hard pounding rock from the 60s-90s and beyond to the folk singers of yesteryear and tomorrow are trying out their stuff in the music capital of the world.

Comedy clubs large and small, from upscale to peanut shells on the floor are everywhere from the top of Central Park to Greenwich Village. They share the city with Cigar and Wine clubs and a thousand shops dedicated to coffees from the world over.

Drinks

Wine

If your taste runs to Scotch and a cigar try the men's club atmosphere of Bull & Bear at the Waldorf-Astoria on Park Avenue near 49th Street. If you prefer a good beer sample some from the selection of over 150 at The Kinsale Tavern on Third Avenue between 93rd and 94th Streets.

Maybe you'd like a great glass of wine in a cozy spot. The SoHo Kitchen & Bar offers oenophiles the finest available in a setting filled with artists.

Maybe the liquid is less important than the ambiance. Head to the Hogs and Heifers at 859 Washington where bras hang off the moose head. Or try instead the sedate and upscale Four Seasons Hotel bar at 57 E. 57th Street.

Be prepared to laugh your patootie off at Caroline's on Broadway at 49th Street. This 300-seat venue hosts the acts that wind up a month later on TV.

Or head to Greenwich Village to MacDougal near Bleeker for the Comedy Cellar. Long established, it still offers the latest funny men and women and sometimes those in-between.

Or make your way uptown to 81st Street on Second Avenue for an evening at the Comic Strip Live. Most of the comics don't strip - thankfully, since the club has been offering the likes of Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld for over 20 years.

Jazz

If you're in the Village and prefer some jazz to laughs, check out The Back Fence at the corner of Bleeker and Thompson. No cover during the week and the acts start early around 6 pm many nights. Don't worry about what's on the floor, it's just crushed peanut shells.

All the way uptown ala Anita O'Day is Cleopatra's Needle they say. On Broadway between 92nd and 93rd, there's live piano and sax with vocalists who just may be the next Diane Krall.

But don't miss the Blue Note. Judged among the world's best jazz clubs by aficionados who know, you can see major stars like Arturo Sandoval or the next Coltrane. As if there could be another.

But if all you want is a good cup of coffee and some great atmosphere, just trip over any curb in the city. You'll fall into a club where they serve things only your know-it-all brother-in-law has heard of.

Thu, 10 Nov 2011 02:28:00 -0800 Cultural History of New York http://cityshopping.posterous.com/cultural-history-of-new-york http://cityshopping.posterous.com/cultural-history-of-new-york

Why is New York so famous? After all, the weather is terrible, the city is overcrowded, and even the buildings are second to many others elsewhere. The cigar-shaped strip of land called Manhattan is difficult to access with bridges crowded with cars, streets clogged with buses and taxis.

Manhattan, New York City

Where after all were some of the first subways built making possible the productive use of former swamp land? The early 20th century saw the expansion of the system North to Central Park and beyond where there were formerly shanties and mosquitos. Now the area hosts some of the most elegant businesses and museums in the world.

House formerly belonging to Jack Morgan

And the history of Wall Street would (and has) fill(ed) many a gripping story of passion, greed, and vision. In the second half of the 19th century J.P. Morgan financed the burgeoning steel and electrical industries and many railroads out of his own pocket (while his competitors ran to the legislature for special handouts).

Settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century, the city quickly became an entrance point to 'the New World' for the thousands - later millions - who sailed into the harbor to seek freedom and fortune.

Effectively the capital of the new nation for a hundred years (though only officially from 1788-1790), it has long attracted inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs of every variety. Thomas Edison, a bit of all three, initiated some of the first city electrification projects here. (His laboratory was in New Jersey, but the Pearl Street Station began operation in 1882 in Manhattan.)

Beyond the material advances that began in the 18th century and continue today, New York has not neglected other important aspects of human experience throughout its history.

One of the world centers of politics, the United Nations is in midtown. Manhattan is also home to a fashion business that has rivaled Milan and Paris since the 1920s. Whether it's fashions in law or clothes, it's here.

United Nations HeadquartersBut Manhattan hasn't been the only part of New York to play a major role in American and world affairs. The Brooklyn Navy Yard was a significant shipbuilding facility during WWII. From the active port was launched many a vessel that helped to conquer the Fascism of the mid-20th century, manned often by men and women from the neighborhood.

Queens and the Bronx are, and have been for a hundred years, home to both major baseball and tennis competitions. Yankee stadium has been thrilling locals and visitors in the Bronx since before Babe Ruth. The US Open Tennis championship takes place in Forest Hills, part of Queens.

Even entertainment and art are at their zenith in New York.

Broadway show billboards at the corner of 7th ...

Broadway has presented everything from Cole Porter in the 1940s to 'The Phantom of the Opera' today, from Olivier's Shakespeare in the the 1950s to 'Penn and Teller' recently. The Metropolitan, opened a hundred years ago, houses 6,000 years of art and Desha is only a few years old, but already joining the ranks of the world's great art museums.

Early radio and television development were centered here and remain major factors in the economic and cultural life of the city. In 1928, William Paley founded CBS and as early as 1931 Bing Crosby was singing nightly on a CBS station. By 1935Edward Murrow joined the company and went on to a series of broadcasts that remain the subject of movies today.

Placed again at the center of history on September 11, 2001, New York has risen to reveal its unconquerable face. The Freedom Tower is set to begin a 1776-foot climb to the sky and residents and visitors from the world over are anew looking up, as they did a hundred years ago to the Statue of Liberty.

That's the short cultural history of New York.

Thu, 10 Nov 2011 02:14:11 -0800 Thrift Store Shopping Advice http://cityshopping.posterous.com/thrift-store-shopping-advice http://cityshopping.posterous.com/thrift-store-shopping-advice

thrift store rule number 1 - don't buy the underpantsMore and more people are hitting thrift and discount shops in the hope of being able to purchase something that is affordable because money doesn't come easy nowadays.  With the rising prices in almost all basic commodities, gasoline, and the like, quite often not much of our money is left after we pay for all our bills and buy our daily needs.

Following are thrift store shopping advice. It can be quite fun as you rummage your way to finding one of a kind items that are still in good condition and in good quality.

You will come to find that a thrift store is quite different from your ordinary shop.  In an ordinarydepartment store you will find a particular item to be sold in many while in a thrift shop there is only one of each kind.

It is important that you are keen and fast when making a decision on whether to buy it or not for if you can't make up your mind and decide to return the following day you won't expect that item to still be around.

Former supermarket, now thrift store, built in...

Most thrift shops usually have something new almost everyday.  I am not telling you to go visit it everyday but if you can't find anything you want today you could always visit again tomorrow or the following day after that in case something new pops up.

I would strongly advise that you only buy something when you need it or want a particular thing.  Avoid going on impulsive shopping sprees.

It is very important that you have the patience when shopping in a thrift store.  You have to go through several racks before you actually find an item that you like.  Going through the items in a thrift shop is like going on a treasure hunt and it poses quite a challenge.

things i purchased at thrift stores today

I would always advice that when you buy clothes, you should try them on to get to see how it looks on you.  Most well practiced shoppers though have an eye at knowing if a particular item fits them by just looking at it.

Many thrift shops have a return policy but why give yourself the hassle of returning the items when you can try them on right there at the shop.

One last piece of advice, check for damages that may have been overlooked like damaged zipper, buttons, etc.  If you find something that you really like having a very slight damage but you are willing to pay for it, make sure that you can repair it or have it repaired.

Links from directories are some of the most valuable links you can get. Note: Directories are not the same as search engines. A link from a directory will help your search engine ranking.

There are thousands of online directories, but some are more significant than others. In addition to directories such as the Open Directory Project, some of the most important search engines such as Yahoo and Google have directories of their own. Some of the greatest advantages of submitting your site to directories are you get:

  • One-way links. Remember, one-way links are more valuable than reciprocal links;
  • Potentially qualified clients repeatedly see your listing.

Obtaining links from directories is one way of promoting your local business, and it will drive an increasing amount of traffic to your site. In addition, you are improving your ranking within search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Once you submit your site information to a directory, it may take weeks or even months to get listed.

While many directories are free, don’t be surprised when you are asked to pay for submission. Certain directories promise to expedite the submission process for paying customers. Directories provide you with a constant stream of visitors and highly valuable one-way links, be sure they are part of your marketing strategy.

Submit Your Site to Industry Sites and Specialized Directories

Because a link from a relevant site is more important than one from an irrelevant site, links from industry sites and specialized directories are highly valuable. If your business is a member of professional associations, ask for a link to your site. The more links you obtain from related websites, the more likely your site will be considered an authority site.

Searching online you will find directories focused on your particular industry such as business coaching, accounting, retail, and such. You almost certainly belong to various trade associations that list member sites. Contact the Webmaster and ask for a link. You may get a link for free or you may be required to pay a fee, either way, it is worth it.

Fri, 27 May 2011 03:20:00 -0700 Why Should Local Business Promotion Be Easy? http://cityshopping.posterous.com/why-should-local-business-promotion-be-easy http://cityshopping.posterous.com/why-should-local-business-promotion-be-easy

Local Business is Everywhere

Local business - SME - Small Medium Enterprise

Local business or Small - Medium Enterprise is everywhere. It might be your next door neighboor.

You can find local business wherever you go and live. This kind of business is usually called SME (Small – Medium Enterprise), due to its size in capital, managerial capability, manpower (labor) and range of products. Small in size doesn’t mean it has trivial resiliency. In many developing countries, it has proven to survive against even the severe monetary crisis that would knock down many big companies.

Local business is also unique in term of its line of products (though it’s small), and ideas when it’s started. The main problem is especially in lack of capital, thus lack of budget, since it’s usually initiated by one person.

Local Business Promotion

The lack of capital also leads to their low ability to promote and in turn further develop the business. Promoting and advertising business is generally expensive, be it online or offline. Despite internet provides many low cost and even free stuffs, including ways to promote business, it requires skills and time – free is the price for your time and effort – which many of the small business owners don’t have.

Now, we’re talking about online promotion. The internet is huge, this brings new marketing opportunity, but there is also a fact that internet users are spread over many sites and services. For example, there are casual browsers that rarely use social medias, there are many email users that are not browsing a lot, and social media users are growing nowadays that “don’t even know” there are other worlds in the internet itself, etc – you got the figure. Internet is way too big and always be growing, for us to realize how huge it is.

The map of the internet

Do you have any idea about how big the internet is? I don't, but I know it's huge. :)

One big trouble as a consequence of this is there’s no single promotion media and method that can bring majority of internet users. Simply say, if you conduct online promotion for your local business, you have to do it ALL! This is not something that can and should be done by business owners. They are too busy to take care of and develop their business, and that is the only thing they should do. A business owner must not be complicated by a single area of their business. Promotion is just one thing, and it must be easy, not seize all of the resources, especially time and money.

Local Business Directory

To help local businesses, there is a local business directory for SMEs to list the business and  state their presence, which in turn attain worldwide recognition. There is also a promotion space to post activities, events, press releases, and everything newsworthy to attract potential consumer attention and awareness. The directory is well recognized in many online and even offline medias. The heavy promotion is done for the business owners, so they don’t have to.

Try it now, it’s free just use this form to add your business. You can list your office, shop and stores complete with all necessary contact information. It is also equipped with map.
